Introduction
The Institute of Forensic Engineering at the University of Žilina (ÚSI ŽU) originated in 1986 with the aim to deepen scientific, pedagogical, coordinative, supervisory and advisory activities in all technical and legal issues of transport and communications.
ÚSI ŽU became a prominent scientific, research, educational and expert laboratory within the Slovak Republic (SR) and a technical authority both in the SR and abroad. ÚSI ŽU improved and enlarged its position within the University and is the only methodical centre of the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic (MS SR) for expert examinations. ÚSI ŽU established a consultative centre in Košice and a satellite laboratory in Trnava.
Research themes
The institute focuses on questions of particularly difficult expert activities requiring scientific examination. It is oriented to the field of methodology, analysis and diagnostics.
Courses
* Full-time study (2 terms) of optional subject Forensic Engineering at the faculties of the University and other universities. There are approximately 80 students enrolled at the institute each year.
* Lifelong education of adults (4 terms) for experts and applicants for expert activity - 1,020 graduates have finished this form of study.
* Professional activities (conferences, seminars, trainings) according to the needs and requirements of MS SR and other public authorities.
Expert activities
The programme is oriented to meet the objectives of our expert institute as well as the mission of the department methodical centre of MS SR for expert activity in the country. During its activity USI ZU has already provided more than 800 expert reviews in the field of transport, engineering, building and electromechanical industry, enterprise economics and other expert branches.
ÚSI ŽU as the department methodical centre focuses on these fields:
Complex education of experts and applicants for expert activities;
Elaboration of expert standards, methodical instructions and expert aids;
Providing methodical, advisory and consultative activities for experts and expert organizations in the Slovak Republic;
Cooperation with advisory and supervisory authorities of MŠ SR shared at legislative and normative activities.
International links
The qualitatively highest form is the membership of ÚSI ŽU in the European association EVU. Since 1995, a regional association, EVU - Slovakia, has been in operation. The international position of ÚSI ŽU was further strengthened by the acquisition of accreditation under EN 45 013 awarded by the accreditation society EURAC in Strasbourg.
The importance and mission of ÚSI ŽU was significantly consolidated with the incorporation of Forensic Engineering into the system of scientific branches and accreditation of the postgraduate doctoral programme at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the TU Košice and Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Žilina.
